World Hypertension Day is observed on May 17th in order to raise awareness and promote hypertension prevention, detection and control. African Americans are more likely to develop complications associated with high blood pressure such as stroke, kidney disease, and heart disease. The prevalence of high blood pressure among African Americans is among the highest in the world. To this end, several members of the CNBN were on hand at the Augusta Engineering Division of the Richmond County Maintenance Department to take blood pressures and educate staff on symptom recognition, prevention and treatment of high blood pressure.

This is the second time that our chapter was invited to participate in this employee health initiative. Staff was very receptive and engaged our members with many questions about diet and exercise and other means of high blood pressure management. It was a great day!!
