At a recent LAUNCH Academy Welcome, Dr Lisa Prince-Clark represented the Augusta University (AU) College of Nursing and spoke about her path to nursing. Starting out as a medical assistant, she was inspired by her mother who was a nurse.  Now possessing a Doctor of Nursing Practice, Dr. Prince-Clark, a member of the Concerned National Black Nurses of the CSRA, is a role model and advisor for nursing students at AU and is a perfect mentor for young adults who have an interest in the healthcare field. She informed the students about the AU Nursing Scholars Program, which encourages academic excellence, research and scholarship for students who are on the “pre-nursing” career path.  She reiterated the importance of getting good grades in high school science courses and how that helps your understanding of college courses. Passion for the profession, collegiality and interprofessional communication were a few of the highlights of her discussion. These qualities promote growth and positive attitudes towards healthcare in our communities.

LAUNCH stands for Leaders and Adolescents Uniting to Navigate Careers in Healthcare. LAUNCH Academy is a non-profit organization that serves as a launching pad for high school students interested in careers in healthcare. The curriculum is research based and provides students with an opportunity to develop skills necessary to become successful in the healthcare workforce through college preparation, basic patient care, and health disparity/inequality training.
