This 1-hour seminar covers the breadth of organisms that produce pathology in humans. The taxonomic classification and characteristics of prokaryotes (bacteria) and eukaryotes (animals, plants, fungi, and protists) will be described, with inclusion of specific species examples. Prions and viruses – whose status as “living organism” is debated among scientists – are explored as well.

Jason Jarvis
Jason Jarvis MSc 18D NREMT-P

Paramedic

Jason Jarvis is a paramedic and former U.S. Army Special Forces Medic with years of accumulated experience as an austere primary care practitioner in resource-poor countries such as Laos, Burma, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Jason holds a master’s degree in Infectious Diseases from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and is a PhD student at Widener University’s Health Professions Education program. He is the author of the Infectious Diseases Ongoing Series in the Journal of Special Operations Medicine, in which he published his first peer reviewed article in 1997 on Plasmodium vivax malaria. He is a freelance medical educator who teaches tropical medicine, advanced trauma courses, minor surgical procedures, ACLS for Experienced Providers, and Pediatric Advanced Life Support. He teaches for the United Nations, the College of Remote and Offshore Medicine, Harborview Medical Center, Children’s Hospital of Seattle, and Cascade Training Center.
